CHAPTER 24
Destiny on Their Skin
I have a rather unexpected guest in the middle of the night, right before dawn. The slim and petite Troll from the Darkmoon Tribe. The Chieftainâs wife approaches me, coming to stand in front of the cage. I shiver from the gusts of wind that blow through the bones of this cage, and she crouches down to my sitting form.
âIâm sorry about Yavoky.'' Her voice is very timid, yet sweet and songlike. It is hard to imagine she is a Troll when all I can see is how cute and feminine she looks. Iâm sure even the human men would be charmed by her, especially her voice. It must be nice to be so appealing.
This is the first time I have heard her speak as well. And she is the second Troll to apologize to me. It's quite strange. I donât expect it, especially from her.
She seems shy, a very odd trait for a Troll as well as she grabs her dress which is very beautiful and flowy. It has a slit, parting from the thighs, to reveal some of her pale legs, and also her jewelry consists of a silver ankle bracelet and one around her thigh.
Unlike the other women, she covers her breasts, only exposing a little cleavage, and her belly is also concealed. Her shoulders, however, are bare and show off some of her dark tattoos. They nearly resemble flowers and are delicate like her.
So, her tribe must be completely different from the Vonkill or Snowfire. Her eyes, which are white, give her the appearance of being blind, but I can tell she can see me clearly, her gaze following me. Her tusks are also so small that theyâre nearly nonexistent, but they poke up from her bottom lip.
She looks down as she kneels in the dirt, and on her lap is a hand-knitted blanket. âI brought you a blanket because I know it will get cold tonight.â She slips it between the bars, and I take it from her gently.
âWhy are you being so nice to me?â I question after gathering the courage to speak up before I wrap the blanket around me. I feel it might be easy to talk to her. She seems the most human out of all of the Night Dwellers.
âWhat Yavoky, my husband, is doing, it isn't right. You did your part, survived the Trial of Blood, Ash and Snow, and now youâre trapped in this cage.â She clenches her small fists. âI might be the wife of the Chieftain here, but I can do very little for you. He has viewed me as nothing more than a woman to keep the peace with my tribe. Since Iâve been here, Iâve been passed around by men who do not want me.â
She must be referring to Jumoke divorcing her and now the Chieftain being cold toward her.
She looks lonely and almost sad, but when she stares at me, I see no resentment toward me as she pushes the hair that has fallen out from her low ponytail behind her ear.
